Hatoyama soon to decide on Fujii's resignation

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has indicated that he will soon decide whether to accept Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii's resignation, based on the recommendations of his doctors.

The 77-year-old Fujii, who has been hospitalized for tests, submitted his resignation request to the prime minister on Tuesday. He cited possible adverse effects on the upcoming Diet budget debate due to his health.

Hatoyama told reporters on Wednesday morning that he wants Fujii to stay on. He said Fujii created a budget plan and that he expects the minister to see it through.

But he stressed that Fujii's health is a vital matter and that when he receives the doctors' judgment, it will be taken into full consideration.
