August 1949

The first Soviet atom bomb, First Lightning/"Joe-1", was exploded on 29 August 1949 07:00 (local) at the Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakhstan. The yield was 22 KT. "Joe-1" is the American designation.



August 1949 also saw the publication of the ninth through twelfth Crow books from Toronto's Alval Publishers. Each book was 160 pages and a reprint of an American book.
